Housed in the historic stone Wollombi Courthouse (circa 1866), Wollombi Endeavour Museum contains an interesting collection from the rich colonial past of the Wollombi and Cessnock districts.
Souvenirs, walking maps, local and family history literature are available. The museum is in Wollombi Village opposite Wollombi Tavern, a tourist information board is located in front of the museum on the main road and there is a shaded picnic table in grounds.
Our Wollombi Museum Open Day is on again in support of the Wollombi Country Fair on Sunday 28th August 2016 and we have a number of exciting events to celebrate this occasion.
Rhe Red Coats ( NSW Corps of Marines) are back and this year they will re-enact 1800’s events depicting convict and earlier settlement NSW history. Muskets and canons will fire on the hour in the Museum grounds where tents, early army tools and punishment equipment will be on display. Floggings may take place when convicts or mischief makers are caught. Historical re-enactments will be held at various times throughout the day.
The Hunter Valley Vintage Farm Machinery Club will have a large display of early working farm machines situated around and outside the Museum grounds on Sunday 30 August. This year Denis Brown will show his latest very old farm engines and will be supported by other members of this club presenting their fully restored farm equipment such as tractors, corn strippers etc.
The Cessnock Family History Group, a Museum relative, will provide its services in the main room of the Wollombi Cultural Centre. If you wish to research your family tree or know more about your family history including skeletons then please take advantage of the skills, abundant information and research capabilities of our Family History group.
Small story placards of unique events in the greater Wollombi district past will be posted around the Museum. Some of these stories will excite you and confirm why we love Wollombi with its strong historic background.
Hope to see you all at the Wollombi Museum Open Day!
